Children of John Oliver Kernick and Rachel Jago:
John Charles Kernick: born 8th December, 1859, in Bodmin. Became a school teacher in 1880 when he was appointed as an Assistant Master at the Walsall Blue Coat School. Headmaster St. Jude's School, London between 1880 and 1884. In 1884 appointed Headmaster of the Boys National School in Oakham. In 1915 he was appointed Secretary to the Rutland Education Committee, retiring in 1929. He married Leah WILSON of Walsall in 1888.
Richard Kernick: born 9 June, 1861, in Bodmin and 'Enlisted by Special Authority' as a Private in the 35th Brigade (probably in the D.C.L.I.) for six years active service and six on the Army Reserve. Married on 26th March, 1894, by 'Licence' to Emily Jane DRURY in Fishponds, Bristol, where his occupation is given as 'Master of Bristol Union' i.e. the Workhouse. He died from 'tubercular phthisis pulmonary haemorrhage' on 26th December 1905, his occupation being shown as 'Master of the Workhouse'. He and Emily had one child, a daughter - Minnie - born on 22nd December 1894.
Bessie Lott Kernick: born 6 July,1863 in Bodmin: married Robert READINGS c.1905. The 1901 census shows aged 31 and that she was a 'Foster Mother' at Wallingford Union Cottage House for Paupers in Wallingford, Berkshire.
Annie Kernick: born c. 1865 in Bodmin, married Thomas REYNOLDS c.1886. Still to be researched
Rosa Jane Kernick: born c. 1867 in Bodmin, died 1953 also in Bodmin. Married George GILBERT, a Private in the D.C.L.I., in 1892 who may have been killed in WW1.
Henry Kernick: born c. 1869 in Bodmin, died 1940. Always known as 'Harry' but very little known about his life. Married Caroline DRAYDON on 30th June 1900, in Bodmin where he was a a butcher's assistant. He and Caroline had one son - John Oliver - born on 29th October 1901, when sadly, Caroline, died in childbirth. To date nothing further is known about John Oliver except that he survived and died in Barnstaple, Devon, in 1983.
Frederick Kernick: born July 1871, joined the Royal Engineers in 1980 and saw service in England, South Africa (Boer War) and Canada, where his trade was given as 'Wheeler and Coach Builder and also qualified to install electric lighting and fire mines'. Married Clara HOPE in 1907 and had five children, two boys and three girls. He retired in 1911 after 21 years of active service. Recalled to the forces in 1914 and finally discharged, with the rank of Company Sergeant Major, in November 1918 as 'No longer physically fit for war service'. Died in Chobham, Surrey in November 1954.
William James Kernick: born 21st August, 1873, at 3 Prison Cottages, Woking, where his father, John Oliver, was an Assistant Warder at the Invalid Convict Prison. He died in Bodmin in June, 1878, aged 5.
Francis George Kernick: born 30th November, 1875, at 2 Prison Cottages, Woking, but unfortunately died the following year on 8th November, of whooping cough.
Mildred Kernick: a half-sister to Rachel's other seven chidren as she was born in 1880, three years after the death of Rachel's husband. Her father is unknown as her birth certificate makes no mention of him. She married Sergeant George DOWNES of Raglan Barracks in the Stoke Damerel Parish Church on 15th October 1899, and to date nothing further is known about them.
