Always interested in sport he was the Honorary Secretary of the Oakham Cricket Club in 1900, and in 1912 he won the Lord Lieutenants Prize for Bisley Shooting. Another of his leisure activities was a keen interest in the National Conservative League and was the first Deputy Master of the Oakham Lodge when it was formed (what was the National Conservative League??). According to the issue of 'The Rutland Conservative' - 'he did some splendid work at the General Election by going out night after night to various parts of the county and speaking in support of the late Mr. Finch'. His efforts were recognised by the members of the Lodge when, at a supper held to celebrate the triumphant return of the Unionist Candidate, he was presented with a handsome timepiece as a mark of their appreciation of his services.
On his retirement in 1929 he and Leah went to live in Pinner Road in Harrow in a house named ‘Catmos’. It would seem that from that time he occupied himself with his wood carving, especially in the field of ‘chip carving’, at which he was master craftsman. . He carried on with his sporting activities by becoming a member of the Northwick Park Golf Club, on the site now occupied by a large hospital and a technical college.
